After interviewing and photographing over 100 nurses for her groundbreaking The American Nurse book and film, Carolyn Jones has spent another two years researching and interviewing nurses for her latest film, Defining Hope, a documentary that follows individuals through end-of-life decisions and choices.  Our aging population and our scientific advances and capabilities clash with current healthcare challenges, including quality and costs. Nurses and other healthcare professionals support individuals making life-altering decisions on a daily basis. This movie opens our thoughts and hearts to identifying and changing a culture where dying is not an accepted societal norm. What makes life worth living for you? How do you as a nurse and an individual define hope?

Target Audience

This activity is intended for all nursing professionals. 

Statement of Need

In healthcare the majority of nurses and other healthcare professionals have cared for individuals that are dying. Understanding the complexities of providing end of life care and supporting patients through the process is impacted by societal's value of maintaing and sustaining life. Society's high value on life can present barriers when providing care and meeting the needs of  dying patients.  In that role, nurses and other healthcare professionals can benefit by increasing  their confidence of how to support others to make life worth living -and help them to Definte Hope.    

Educational Outcome

Upon completion of this activity learners should be able to:

1. Consider the impact of  caring for individuals at the end of life and its effect on your daily practice as a nurse.
   • Reflect upon a video from the documentary website provided and share your perspective.
